My Father had 2 strokes less than 2 weeks apart. He has been released from Duke Hospital Neuro ICU and is now a patient at a rehab facility. Physical Therapy has been awesome, but he still can't walk. He lives by himself. I am his son and I live an hour and a half away, and I'm not eligible for retirement. He still can't walk. His 100 Medicare days expire this week, and he is not well enough to go home, and we're not able to afford the private pay fees at Hillcrest. Is there any help for us ? Please...

Has there been a care meeting or planning meeting since dad has been at rehab? My mom had one every two weeks or so. No one should expect you to retire or pay for his care. The socisl worker should have given you a list of facilities to look at, information about Medicaid. Is it possible another family member is getting this information ?

I agree that the social worker should be able to help. Here's a link for Special Assistance in NC. They handle Medicaid too.

Have the staff discussed his discharge and how he will fare at home? Normally, there has to be a plan for him going home and his after care. They shouldn't expect you to pay for his care. Does he have the funds to pay?

Do you think he needs a nursing home? In NC, you have to be able to transfer with the assistance of one person in order to live in Assisted Living. IF he can transfer okay, he can apply for Special Assistance, which is NC's payment for Assisted Living for certain individuals who need it according to a doctor and if they meet the financial requirements. Social services can assist you with the application, but I would read a lot before I applied.

Do you think he would qualify for Medicaid? They will pay for the nursing home, if he needs skilled nursing care. He could apply and if he qualifies they will pay for his nursing home care. There are lots of rules about this though. If he does, I'd read a lot more around here and even check with an attorney about it.

I hope that helps. I hope you'll get more responses that might help you.

Are you his Durable Power of Attorney and Healthcare POA? If not, I'd get that immediately.

Talk with sicial worker there tell them that Dad lives alone and needs more help than you can provide. Be firm, they will try to guilt you into taking him home. The social worker should be able to find a place for him at another facility. Is dad on Medicaid? Would he qualiify for Medicaid? You have lots to do, and you better get going. He can be admitted to a facilty Medicaid pending. Also check your state's Medicaid waiver program. Most will pay the difference between his income, less sixty dollars, and facility cost. Does Dad own a home that can be used fot nursing home expenses?
