Find Care & Housing
My mother-in-law lives in asst living also. She too never had a girlfriends, just her family. In fact, she used to brag and say "I don't need anyone except my family". So now, my husband and I (mostly me) are basically the only family that she sees on a regular basis. I talked to the gal that runs the socialization aspect where she lives and asked her if she'd make sure and have my m-i-l included in whatever activity they were having. Mother-in-law has macular degeneration and dementia, so she can neither SEE nor REMEMBER what the heck is going on there most of the time. So that's what they've been doing with her. When I take her back from one of our own outings, we'll walk in and someone will tell her 'we're getting together upstairs in 15 minutes, see ya there'. She'll turn to me and say "I really don't want to go". But then 15 minutes later they come down and get her, and she goes because she can't remember she said NO. ha Ask them where you mom lives if they'll start making the effort to wheel her to wherever she'll be part of some activity. They'll do it if you ask.
