In response to the idea of getting your mother a well-trained dog, it may not be the best idea for your mother or the dog. Unless you can find someone to take the dog for regular daily walks, to the veterinarian, etc., I think owning a dog would just be an additional burden for your mother to cope with. There are groups who have pets that are trained as therapy dogs who visit libraries, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, etc. You could try contacting them as some of their members may be willing to bring their pet to visit your mother regularly.
