My dad retired years ago at a beautiful home on the beach. He kept a second home here with us. Since being diagnosed with dementia he has essentially moved out of both houses (though we still have the beach house) and is living in an independent living community near me with 24/7 caregivers. He often gets confused and thinks he is just vacationing where he is. He often speaks of getting down to his home at the beach to check on things. It has been almost 2 years since his last visit down there. He is very OCD which includes a fair amount of worry. The house is in a little bit of disrepair. My sister wants to take him down to his home because it "gives him so much joy". I am concerned that acclimating him back after a trip like this may be problematic. I want her to be able to do it, but the stress of it all is getting to me. He gets real confused about where he lives and all and is frequently packing to go home.

Any advise? Should I let her take him?

If you don't mind caring for him completely. Meaning you need to help him go to the bathroom, maybe even clean him up. Even only a couple of days, he may not need to bath but I would ask this be done before you go.

Is the beach house really far?
I agree with other posts... check the house out before going.
Most of all remember that the trip is for him.

If no one has been to the beach house I would go first and check out it's shape, as you say he is OCD.. and he will likely stress if it's not "perfect" as he imagines it. We take my FIL to his river house several times a year, but he mostly sits around bossing us around or wants driven in his golf cart to visit the neighbors he knows. We do get him out on the boat sometimes. But even with the work, he loves it. Maybe she could try it once and see how it goes. He may not even remember it's his, but enjoy it anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say.
