My dad will be 92 next month. He has smoked cigarettes or cigars since he was 17 years old. In the past 2 years he has fallen and broken his hip, had 2 strokes ( the last one has left him unable to use his left hand and leg and is for the most part wheelchair bound) and had pneumonia twice this summer. The first bout with pneumonia landed him in the hospital for a week. He lives with my brother, who has to do everything for him except feed him. We have caregivers come in to help 5 days a week. He has started giving my brother and the care givers so much grief about not letting him smoke. Mentally he is still very sharp. No dementia. Some family members think we should just let him still enjoy his cigar after dinner. My brother and I are trying to follow the doctor's advice of "no more smoking."

At this point what could it hurt to let him have his cigars....I remember my grandmother wanting to have my grandfather stop smoking his pipe (at age 93) and his doctor said the shock of stopping would probably do him more harm than good...he lived 2 more years. Blessings, Lindaz

Seriously? I don't like anyone smoking, but in this circumstance just leave it alone.

I agree with your family members. If your 91 year old dad wants to smoke a cigar after dinner let him enjoy his cigars. I understand wanting to do what the Dr. suggests but at your dad's age we should all be so lucky as to still be able to enjoy a guilty pleasure.
