I have not been able to work since I am the caregiver for my mother. Taking care of my mother is hard work (as you all know), but so very rewarding. She is my world. I just need income to help us get along. I am not able to contribute financially. Is there a way to receive income for being a caregiver for your elderly parent?

Thanks Freqflyer. I understand your point, but they have always been there for me so now I will be there for them. They are wonderful people. It's just the price of meds along with food and bills is extremely high. I will find a way. Thanks again. :-)

Tiahane, even if you took courses to become a professional Caregiver and were hired by a Caregiving Agency, the Agency would bill your parents for payments. The Agency isn't going to send you out for free and pay you.

Your best bet is to see if your parents qualify for Medicaid... each State is different so it will be up to you to see what is available for them. Your State might even allow you to be your parent's caregiver but don't be surprised if the State says they will pay you for 3 hours per day when you are doing 8 hours of work. The pay would probably be minimum wage, minus payroll taxes.

By the way, a grown child should NOT be responsible for paying for a parents food, bills, medication, etc. Otherwise you won't have any money left to take of yourself when you get older.

Thanks for the response, but that is not possible. They struggle already. Medication, co-pays, etc. I am wondering how to go about becoming an employed caregiver so I can have my parents as my patients. This would help to bring money into their home to cover bills, food, medication.

Yes, your parents can pay you an income for being their Caregivers. If they can afford to do that, make sure you set up an employment contract which states the number of hours worked each week, the duties, the hourly wage, and who will pay the payroll taxes.
