Bedrail suggestions..dad transfers from wheelchair to bed, then slides off blaming mattress not level.Doesn't want new bed or $99 bedrail. Found Stander folding bedrail $99 that has strap for boxspring which is needed since mattress is not heavy (twin size adjustable bed). Dad says that is too expensive (think he wants a fisher-price toddler bedrail!). Claims his mattress is not level. (It is) So I suggested a new bed. That is a definite NO. Tired of going over at 3am to pick him up off the floor. Won't call 911 because he "doesn't want to bother those guys". Husband and I velcroed his mattress to box spring with heavy duty Velcro so mattress slippage is not the problem. He just isn't sitting fully on the side of the bed so slides off and ends up on floor and can't get up. Husband was also looking at the Stander tension floor to ceiling pole to help him with wheelchair to chair or bed transfer.
Any suggestions?

How much does dad weigh? And how are his stomach muscles? Can he turn himself over?

The man is wheelchair dependent yet he lives on his own? Has he had occupational therapy to show him how to transfer safely? If the sole problem is not having something sturdy to assist then either option you mentioned would be helpful, but if he thinks the bed assist rail is too expensive then he will really balk at the price of a super pole. Just buy the d*#$ed thing and put it on, call it a birthday present!

Dad weighs about 160 lbs. Yes, he is wheelchair dependent and lives on his own. REFUSES to consider assisted living or any other living arrangements. He was doing physical therapy 2x week until they decided he wasn't improving and couldn't justify the visits thru medicare. He would not exercise on his own, only when PT was there. PT suggested he see an orthopedic dr for his knee pain. Dad finally agreed, I made the appointment, then he cancelled the day before. PT supervisor was pretty mad and said "we're done!"
Husband says he is convinced dad just disagrees with me no matter what I say, do, buy, try, etc. Do I need dr. to get occupational therapist to come out?

You need to stop picking him up. The next time he falls, YOU call 911. I'm sorry if this sounds uncaring. But think about what will happen if there is a fire in the middle of the night.
