Care for father from 1986-2010 post aneurysm/stroke. Having to stop and start work at different times due to my horrible depression at my fathers untimely illness. Unfortunately this illness has taken over and I was wondering if there are any assistance that I may be available to. Are there any assistances to people who hire the mentally ill.

I hope your depression is under control and as stable as possible, it is a terrible disease! I know Wal Mart in our area does hire disabled from greeters to stockers all different positions and at all different shifts might be worth a shot. Also try your local mental health facility/center they may have job postings! Also as said by gladimhere I would check with the Goodwill. I assume he passed by your 2010 date you had on your post or maybe he is now in a facility, so I assume you no longer care for him?Because it could be an issue if you still are and want to get disability benefits. Bless you for caring for your dad!

In my area the Goodwill has an employment office that assist the disabled with finding work in many different sorts of businesses. Then some employment benefits may also be available depending on the employer. Perhaps you have a Goodwill office where you are that provide this sort of assistance.

Filing for disability is certainly an option but be careful. When I filed (diagnosed as Major Depressive Disorder) there were a lot of questions about my responsibilities. They may feel if you are able to care for your Dad you are able to work outside the home. They will not give you disability just because you need to take care of him instead of working. Also, don't even start the process unless you are under a doctor's care, with them on board supporting you when you file, and have a definitive diagnosis. I had both which is how I know how necessary these two things are to the process. Good luck!

With a doctor's signature on a form you get at Social Security, file for disability social security. If this is a debilitating disorder (as mental illness is), you can receive benefits without being 65. It is worth a try...
