My father just passed away. My name is on the joint acct with my deceased father. I use this acct to manage all his bills and house expenses. My brother and I are in the process of selling my father's house. I told my brother that I would split the account amount with him once all is settled with my father's expenses, but he is demanding that his name be on the account. How should I handle this?

Tell him no.

He will receive an accounting when the dollars are settled after the bills are paid and your Dads affairs are settled.

Last thing you need is to have brother start spending money from and account you need to settle final expenses. Don't let him get into the position of doing it.

If he continues to complain...point out that Dad entrusted you to do this...not both of you...just you. So be it

Should I add him as a beneficiary to the account? He seems to be concerned about not getting his money in case something happens to me. All of a sudden he's concerned. It's crazy how ugly things get between family members. I never thought this could happen.

First, my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family for the passing of your Dad.

Curious, have you gone to Probate regarding your Dad's estate or was everything in a Trust?

Thank you for your kind words. The house is in a trust in my name and my brother. The checking account is a joint account that my name was on with my father because I managed his finances over the past few years. There is no estate.
