My Mom was diagnosed in June with dementia. She is now living with my husband and I, with my husband taking care of her during they day. We need help but do not know how to go about getting financial help for this. She owns a house in California and has a little savings. She gets SS and a monthly pension. Can we get any financial assistance?

Catherine: Sorry to tell you that there is little financial assistance available in cases like this. The VA is a possibility but she'd have to have a REALLY small monthly income and they are strict about it. (A friends mom was denied because her $625 a month in Soc Security is $35 over the max monthly allowable income) If you read through the money and legal section of this site you might see other related threads that have some good ideas.

Remember that if you provide more than 50% of ALL annual support for your mom, you can claim her as a dependent on your taxes. She should also be contributing from her income to your household expenses. Generally houses are sold or rented but if you rent that can impact her ability to get medicaide - state assistance. If she DOES need medicaide there are state residency requirements she must meet. Contact your state dept of health and welfare or which ever administers medicaide to understand their requirements.

Wow elyea
I would say be sure to take time for you and your wife. find a place you can take her to if you need a break and you will need a break. If you both work she will need someone to stay with her or an adult day care. My mom was diagnosed in 99 but the last 5years I have seen the bigest change. I am now looking into assisted living. Good luck to you and your wife and be sure to take care of you to :)

Look forward to seeing additional comments as well as my Mother was just diagnosed this June and will be moving in with me and my new wife. Guess the honeymoon is over after 3 weeks.

If your father was a veteran and married to your mother at the time of his death, she may be eligible for VA Aid & Attendance,
to help pay to have someone come in to assist with her care.
