Her driver's license has not expired but she is no longer driving. I just wondered if she will need some type of ID after the license expires. She is in an assisted living facility.

H & R Block and banks require a current picture ID. I don't get how your identity changes just because an ID is expired, but that's what they require.

My mother has a non-driver's ID. It is good for her entire lifetime. Most places would probably accept an expired license, but it is better not to risk it. Every doctor wants to see the identification now to make sure the right person is using an insurance policy.

My mom has a state-issued (Illinois) picture ID card. I can't even remember where/when we got it now. My mom also no longer drives. I think maybe we got the state ID when her driver's license expired. We've had to use it at doctor's offices and bank to verify who she is (since it has her picture on it). I'd recommend you get one if you live in a state that issues them and your mom is in good enough shape to get there.
