I currently have Medicare and United Health. My prescription medicine costs are killing me and, recently I lost all my income except for Social Security. I am 81 but still trucking. I live with my daughter and son-in-law. If I qualify and if I change to Medicaid, what happens to my Social Security??

I drive a car, I have insurance, I have certain debts I must pay and this is what my Social Security pays for. Will I lose monies????

Your SS does not change. You may want to check and see if your state has a prescription plan for low income residents. In NJ its called PADD. There is just a small copay. I think $5. Call your local Medicaid office and see if you qualify. If you do, dental and vision are included, in my state anyway. The PADD I talked about is a separate program. Call your County Office of Aging, they maybe able to help you thru it.

Social security is based on your past earnings and is a Federal program.

Medicaid is specific to each state.

I don't see how your SS would change, unless it is disability related .

Moms SS didn’t change one penny when she went into a NH on Medicaid. But I don’t know if it would be affected if she was on Medicaid just for health insurance.

Normally, people keep Medicare, as they are primary and then Medicaid pays, as secondary. That's what I have seen in my state.

I'd meet with the person in your state that processes the applications. You might find some things online too, but, I have found them to be confusing. In helping my LO, I discovered that if you qualify for Medicaid Medical, you may be entitled to other services, like others have mentioned. I'd ask about whether supplemental policies are needed and why. I would also check into a medication Supplemental police that helps with medication costs and inquire about Extra Help, which a program that may pay for the supplemental plan. But, based on what I've seen, you should expect to receive no out of pocket for anything medical if you have Medicare and Medicaid. Your Medicaid case worker should be able to give you details and explain what you qualify for. Do you know if your family members income would be included with yours?

I'd also ask about Food stamps, phone program, transportation programs, tax programs that reduce your property taxes, and other services that might help you.
