Mother and father live in a small three bedroom house and the caregiver would have their own bedroom. My mother walks with a walker, but needs assistance 24/7. My father is aging gracefully and doesn't require assistance, yet. We would like an independent to move in, however, unsure how to find this person. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I think it's way more convenient to hire from an agency. What happens if the person you hire privately gets sick? Or injured on your property? Will you be taking taxes out of her paycheck or will she do that on her own? How will you conduct a thorough background check? Not just a legal one but one for someone who works in healthcare? That's a whole other background check. You'll need to draw up a contract that will include hours, wage, days off, etc. You'll need someone to be insured and bonded. What if she accidently tosses a wipe into the toilet and it clogs up your pipes? Who pays for that?

And if you have someone live-in how do they get a day off if they've actually moved in with you? If you do a live-in through an agency the agency ensures that there's always someone there.

I understand why people want to work independently. Why give an agency their hard-earned money? But there's more security with an agency for both the worker and the client. There are too many pitfalls with an independent worker and for you, the client.

Spinrose, another thing to remember, if you hire an employee [who doesn't work for an Agency] to work at the house, your parents will need to add a "workman's comp" rider to their homeowners insurance in case that employee should get hurt on the job.

There are websites for Santa Fe Springs CA for live-in help, but what they don't tell you is the wage law California has enacted:

For example, you will be paying at least minimum wage, plus overtime and even double time if there is no relief person.
