Are there such companies out there and who are they? I am a retired Marine looking for a health care plan to supplement TriCare Champus that will pickup the costs that TriCare doesn't pay. TriCare pays as much as 70% of the normal doctor, medical and pharmacy but I want to get a plan that I would have coverage for the remaining expenses - minus a small copay if necessary.

I think you might be looking at a different group of companies that provide supplemental benefits to a Tricare plan, so I quickly googled "Tricare supplement plans" and got a lot of hits, but not from the companies I'm familiar with that do typically provide Medicare supplemental plans.

Blue Cross Blue Shield provides Medicare supplement plans; I don't know if they would provide Tricare supplemental plans as well, but it's a possibility.

If I post links that are commercial, the Admins delete portions of the links, so try googling as I did.

Also did some checking on a diversified site maintained by a former AF man (whose newsletters I subscribe to) and learned that there are different Tricare plans, depending on age, but also according to his website each Military Treatment Facility has a Tricare ombudsperson who can assist with health care options. I'm thinking this might be a quick way to get information as presumably these folks would know what's available as a Tricare supplemental policy.

I'm assuming also that you've applied to the VA for health care benefits as well?

There are some retired military folks here; perhaps one of them will see this post and offer more succinct advice.

And, thank you for your service.

Thanks for your post. Blue Cross Blue Shield I already contacted - they don't have a supplemental for Tricare like a Medicare supplement plan. I contacted United Health care - same thing. AARP - same thing. I also contacted the VA - even though I am retired and have military related small health issues, I received no less than 2 letters that indicated my income was too much and was to pursue other avenues for service - VA sorry can't help you. VA is a blow and a waist as I see it. But, I will see if I can contact the buds person for help. Great information. thanks, Elton

I'm a bit surprised; I was told by 2 different VA sources that my father could get health care from the VA regardless of his income. Notwithstanding, have you applied for a service connected disability? That might affect your eligibility for health care and change the income qualifier issue.

Just did another quick Google search and got some hits to check out for supplemental plans. I'm P'M'ing to you in a few moments.

Although I don't recall the specific issue, I do recall some change by the VA in its position on income qualification, but it may just apply to one specific category of VA care.

Despite your knowing your way around the military, you might find the American Legion or VFW helpful in pursuing VA qualification. They know how to apply for the service-connected status. They handled it quickly and well for my father, a WWII veteran.
