No diagnosis of alz. or dementia, My grandma has been getting up around 5 am and listening to news talk radio (NPR). She has always been religious and an environmentalist, but she has been repeating religious words. She wants me to put religious messages on Facebook or Twitter, and if I refuse, she gets very upset, cries, says I don't love her and won't help her. I am not sure what to do because if I take her to a hospital, they will only give her anti-psychotics to calm down. (She has been on them before but I tapered her off them because of side effects of shaking, head nodding, angry outburst, and mouth movements) Her doctor left without notice and she cant see another doctor for a week. I have no one else to help me and she wont let me call for other outside help. Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know how long ago she was taking the medications that caused those side effects, but they are making constant strides trying to improve those kind of things. She needs to be seen by a doctor so when the time comes, don't let her talk you out of it. Maybe it's time the TV had a 'problem' and went down for a week or so to give her a rest from the agitation.

Has your grandma ever been evaluated for dementia or Alzheimer's? Her behavior is not normal and I have to wonder if she has some dementia.

I agree with what NancyH is trying to say. If your GM is agitated by listening to NPR, can the radio "break or disappear" somehow, in such a way that GM can get a break from the negative news about the world?

Also, I cared for my Catholic GM for several years and, for her benefit, learned some of her recited prayers and said them with her. I know it was a great comfort to her. Maybe instead of posting the messages on fb, you can take a moment to pray with your GM and allow her to feel like she is "doing something" about what she sees as a "world in peril"? I personally do not subscribe to any organized religion's doctrines, but for the sake of my GM, I had no problem saying prayers with her and talking to her comfortingly about God/Jesus/Heaven. Take a moment to pray with her and reassure her that God is looking after His world and GM doesn't need to do that job, God has it handled... just some ideas for you, I think you see where I'm going with this.

Staying very calm yourself, while interacting/dealing with your GM, will also help her to feel more secure in general. I hope I'm not sounding preachy here, just mentioning a couple of basic ideas in how to deal with elders when they're agitated and upset. You should get her back into a doctor, though, of course, if she continues feeling agitated/upset all the time.

Thanks everyone. My GM is very attached to tv and radio, so she would be agitated or depressed if either were "broken". She feels compelled or called by God to do something or just get the word out about the environment and feels it is her duty. I have talked with her about the world's problems being handled by God and not her, but nothing works. She has had many tests last year to check for Alzheimer's and dementia and strokes but nothing was found or determined. She has been hospitalized for this behavior twice since 2011.She often has trouble sleeping, so we figured it might be lack of sleep or stress or depression. Lots of family and friend deaths in the past 2years, plus hearing about all the recent disasters has deeply affected her,
