Sounds like someone got control over her money so it wouldn't be misused or stolen. So where are her checks going to now and who is paying the bills?

I don’t understand how that happened. So sorry. Hope you get it settled soon.

Not sure what you mean by "checks". Do you mean Social Security? Or some other payment? Presumably she is over 65 and on Medicare? No one can "take away" your SS or Medicare. The funds can be diverted to a nursing home to pay for care, but they don't disappear.

First you need to find out WHERE her money is going. Do you have POA? If not you are going to have trouble getting anyone to tell you anything. That should be your first step, so you can look into things on your own without your mom having to write letters or get things notarized with every institution that needs dealing with.

Best of luck!

Bruno, please clarify a little...your profile says your mom was in a nursing home? But now she’s in rehab? Is she going back to the NH? You say they may be “taking away her insurance”. Is it possible that she is transitioning from Medicare paying for rehab, to a Medicaid situation where long term Medicaid will be paying for the NH? If this is the case her social security check may be going directly to the NH. You need to speak to the financial office to see if they have been made “payee” of her check, and to better understand how the finances work. Hopefully you are her POA?

If I misunderstood and she has moved home to your care, her checks may still be going to the NH. You need to contact them.

When you are on Medicare and receive Medicaid to help pay for your care in LTC, you still receive Medicare. Medicare is primary and Medicaid secondary for ur healthcare. Medicaid pays for the physical care in LTC with SS and any pension offsetting the care.

The NH cannot take away her insurance. Was the NH made payee of Moms SS? If so, SS needs to be called to take them off now Mom is home.

I think you need help. I would try Office of Aging to see if they can help you with help with this problem.

Joann the OP is talking about life insurance not health insurance. The OP has several posts which are all very hard to follow but in one of them, he talks about “them” trying to cash in his moms 20 year life insurance policy. I think it was so that she could transition from Rehab to LTC with medicaid picking up the tab. Also the OP has no authority, his brother has POA. So the OP cannot just call SS.
