My 92 year old mother with dementia lives in our home. She is on hospice and we have used our 24 hours of free getaway time allowed by Medicare. Where do we turn for sitters for hire that will come to our home and sit with mom for up to 6 hours. She requires help to portapot and having tea made for her.

Home healthcare aides can help you. There are numerous agencies around the country. Find one in your area, do your research, then make a call to one. They can provide aides that work with your schedule.

Your local Commission on Aging may also have information on home care aides they can connect you with.

After trying out a few caregivers from local agencies, I discovered they are paid minimum wage and just don’t care.

i found friends of the family and friends of friends worked out great. I think because they are connected directly to me, they were much more concerned.

I made sure the agency paid them $15 - $18 per hour. That probably helps too, since it was clear they were valued more than MacDonalds employees.

Not sure if you live in the states or not but I've had great success with Visiting Angels. They are a nation franchise and I can't speak to any others than the one in south FL I use. FYI the more "complex" the care required (like companionship v. hospice) the higher the fee (and assumably, their wage as well). Find an agency and call and speak to the owner(s) about your needs. You'll get a good feel for their level of competency and understanding. The owner in FL had a mom w/dementia so he thoroughly understand and had compassion for our situation. Friends, family and neighbors can work, trying to schedule them and fill in the gaps will feel like work. Volunteers are not that reliable or vested. Six hours a day is way more than any personal friends will do on an ongoing basis. Private hires are "unknowns" and make you an employer. At an agency the best people want the most hours consistently in a week, so if you can commit to 30 hrs a week, you should be able to make it work out. Good luck!
