After a brief hospitalization in December for a fib, my Mom started having auditory hallucinations. At first I thought it was just because of the new medication they put her on and talked to the cardiologist about this and was told that it was unlikely the meds. The hallucinations continued to get worse over the course of months and not knowing what else to do, took her to the ER where they admitted her for psychological evaluation but they sent her home the next day . No help at all! So took her to her regular doctor and was sent to a Memory Clinic were she was diagnosed with (probably) mild vascular dementia. It’s been downhill since then. Most days she doesn’t know me or my other siblings, doesn’t talk much and sleeps almost all day but fortunately the hallucinations have stopped. However,in the last couple of weeks she almost seems herself. She is more cognitive and not sleeping as much. Is it normal for dementia to come and go?

Did the memory clinic have any concerns about any of the meds she's on, especially the new ones? If she went downhill so fast, it's possible that they are connected. Not necessarily but it's quite a coincidence.

Dementia certainly can be like a cha-cha. One step forward, 2 steps back. Lucid one moment, crazy the next. My MIL has been having crazy huge swings between the 2 extremes lately. Hoping she lands back on the lucid side cuz the irrational side was quite a rapid change. Her doc at nursing home is working on her meds so we'll see what happens.
