Hi everyone. Having a small scruple moment. I recently purchased my mother a shopping trolley for $30 Australian. As PoA & PoG I have access to her account. Would it be appropriate to reimburse myself from it? Me thinks not. What do you think?
Why ever would you hesitate to reimburse yourself for something bought for your mom's benefit? I always made purchases for my mom on her credit card and had the balance set to auto pay from her bank account, the statements served as a good way to keep track.
I always reimbursed myself. I am not big on keeping records on the computer, like spreadsheets. I would take an envelope and put the receipts in it and once a month write myself a check. Then I would put the month and ck number on the outside of the envelope. All Moms bills were paid out of her checking acct. Her bank statement was proof that the Social Security came in and the bills went out. For a $2 fee a month a copy of the checks were included. When Mom went into care, Medicaid never questioned Moms statements.
Yes, absolutely. You should keep meticulous records as to what you bought, the receipt for same and the reason Mom needs it. And then you reimburse yourself. There's no question about this and it is not in any way dishonest. You are, as POA, responsible to get Mom what she needs. In most cases this should be done through a checking account that is hers with you signing checks as the POA. that is the easiest way to keep your file folders and records about expenditures. A simple diary with attached receipts would work as well.
