I was so grossed out to catch my husband peeing in the bathroom sink! I yelled at him for doing it and pointed him to the toilet. We just had our bathroom redone and I suppose he thinks it is a urinal. How can I stop such disgusting behavior. He wears Depends, but I am thankful that he still uses the bathroom on his own. I cannot watch him every single minute. Does anyone have any good ideas. He doesn't read signs, so that won't work either.

YIKES!!! How low is this sink? I'm trying to picture this scenario and cannot imagine how anyone could mistake a sink for a toilet. Is it possible that he has done this for a long time and you just now caught him? I discovered my husband peeing in the shower (GROSS) and he told me ALL men do that. Does your husband have dementia?

I do think that all men pee in the shower. :)

I think that I would keep a container of Lysol wipes near the sink and wipe it down, after he exits. You could keep disposable gloves there, too.

In a NH (and in my home) the toilets are in separate rooms, from a sink. It seems like a good idea, now. Good luck with your husband. My FIL had ALZ. and I don't know how his wife kept him at home. She was 80, herself.

It could be worse; he could be peeing in the kitchen sink when there are dishes in it.
Could the height of the sink have something to do with it? Maybe he finds it easier on his back or his knees to pee in the sink rather than in the toilet. You have to pick your battles. This doesn't seem so terribly horrible to me, but then I'm a live-and-let-live kind of person who's seen a lot of disgusting behavior in my life, and sink-peeing doesn't particularly bother me. Feces are another thing entirely. I would go ballistic if I found a turd in the sink or the shower.
I suppose you could put something over the sink to prevent him from peeing in it.

I agree with the others. Pee is really not dirty. It will just stink if not cleaned up. I would look at it as having to clean the sink more often and the toilet less. It may actually be good, since men are notorious for missing the toilet. It is easier to clean the sink than the floor. :)

This hasn't happened to us but I don't find it all that shocking. Haven't you read other posts about others who urinate or worse all over the house? With dementia, it seems to me that many men pee in wastebaskets, closets, etc. They are confused....after all, a waste basket is for waste, a closet is an enclosed private area. Just be glad he didn't pee on the decorative plants inside the mall. To prevent further problems you may want to remind him to void on a regular schedule and point him in the right direction. He does have dementia doesn't he? If you haven't thought about that, you should get him checked out. If you already know he does, why are you surprised? BTW, you do know that people pee in showers, baths, and swimming pools, don't you? It happens, demented or not.

I'll trade you peeing in the sink for peeing in the closet.

Sigh.

Well your answers got me laughing about what I thought was a horrible problem. Yes he has had Alz for 9 years. This is the first time I caught him. I said why are you peeing in the sink? He said, "I'm not!" So I am just now getting into the really yucky stuff. But I see from the answers that its going to get worse. Maybe he has been peeing in there for years. The other day he wanted to french kiss me. I told him no because he doesn't brush much. Only when I make him. He said yes I brushed! And pointed to drops in the sink. For all I know they were pee drops! Hahaha. I need to laugh about this! But now I hesitate to take him to any friend's house or out to eat. We have been doing this and going out together ! Except at my grandson's graduation, Bill went in the bathroom and later my grandson went in . He came out saying it was pigsty in that bathroom. I knew what happened. He doesn't know how to wipe himself and sometimes gets it on his hands and everything else he touches! Now that's a YUCK! Gotta laugh!
Thanks for answers that cheered me up!

wamnanealz, you may need to start accompanying him to the bathroom when you are out. I love places that have unisex or family bathrooms! If I had to choose I'd take my husband into the women's. I'd hesitate at the door and say "Bringing a man in." No one ever objected. Women's toilets are all in stalls so there is less privacy to violate there. Carry disposable wash clothes with you to help with the cleanup. To me this was better than stopping going out. It is Not Fun, but you might as well consider it Funny.

I had an even worse experience. We went to a nice restaurant and my husband didn't come out of the bathroom. I asked a man to check on him and he said" you better go in. HEre he was sitting on the urinal and had defecated in it. URinals have just a a tiny stream of water and it wa a mess. I did the best I could and had to tell them at the desk. When I asked him why he didn't go into the toilet he said, " THis is the toilet."!!!! Sad!

I could never understand why men who were starting to have difficulty peeing standing up, why didn't they just sit down on the toilet to pee.... or would that be too insulting to one'smale ego?... [rolling eyes]

My ex-hubby was a Felix Unger type when it came to cleaning his bathroom, and he started sitting down to pee because he found he was making too much of a mess standing up. It didn't hurt his male ego at all by sitting down.
