Curious what could cause leg tremors. Mom's legs shake, usually one more than the other, when first standing or needing to step down. Any ideas?

Dear findthehumor,

I'm sorry to hear about your mom's leg tremors. Have you asked the doctor or nurse? Is this a new development? I wonder if it could be a side effect of any new medications she could be taking. Or does she have MS or Parkinson's?

I hope others on this site can give more insight.

This really is a question for a doctor who can do the necessary bloodwork and exams as a start. A few thoughts, which are only a few of the possibilities...orthostatic hypotension could be making her weak, and might be causing shaky legs. How exactly does she get up? Move to the edge of the seat, place both hands on the sides of the chair and push up with her arms? Or does she use the "rocket" move and thrust herself upwards?

I think the key is that she stabilizes (as I understand your post). So that makes me think something about the method of getting up is an issue.

Is she well hydrated? Does she eat well, having a balanced diet including meat? Has she ever been anemic? Does she get any exercise for her legs?

I've personally had or seen experience with orthostatic hypotension and anemia, both of which can cause weak legs which can become shaky.

When you write "step down", do you mean going down stairs?

Thanks so much for your replies. I do have an appointment scheduled. The tremors have been for the last 4 months or so and are not consistent. It is definitely worst when stepping down stairs. She is not well hydrated so I'll take note of that as a possible link. Thank you.

Tremors going down stairs could also be emotional, arising from anxiety and fear of falling.

I'd appreciate your sharing any information that's not confidential after the appointment. I'm interested in this topic for my parent as well as for myself.
