My mom was given a dog by someone. She is not able to walk the dog. She is also not able to manage having the dog go on wee wee pads in the house. The dog is untrained has never been on a leash. The dog urinates and defecates in the house. Then my mom rolls over if with her wheel chair. What options do I have? Should I find a new home for my mom? Get a dog walker?

Find Care & Housing
It sounds as though mom can't care for herself, much less a dog.

The dog needs to be re-homed. Can you take it to a no-kill shelter?

Why on earth would anyone give a dog to a person who is barely able to fend for themselves? That is mind boggling to me!

It may break your mom’s heart to re home her pooch but she’ll get over it. Please do what is right for the dog.

The way that you describe your mom in your profile leads me to believe that she should be placed in a facility. Have you spoken with her about this?

As far as her cataract surgery goes, let me tell you, it is the easiest surgery that I have ever had in my life!

The anesthesiologist asked me if I liked music. I told him that I loved music! He then said, “Great! I will play three or four tunes for you and then your surgery will be done!”

It’s completely painless and over in a flash! Nothing at all to fear.

Someone once suggested my sibling get a little dog "for company". They meant well but were clearly clueless.

I was asked to "help". When I picked apart 'help' it was this list;
research dog types, buy dog, help buy dog food, regularly walk it. I asked about matters like finding a vet, health checks & treatments, training, bathing/grooming & cleaning up poo. Stare.. thinking time... Oh. Hmm.

Sibling has multiple disabilities & has limited self-care ability. Requires much assistance for all ADLs from family & home help aides.

The dog idea was unrealistic.
A fantasy idea.

If Mom wants to keep a dog she must take on the responsibility for keeping a dog. Can she?

If she cannot walk, train, wash, arrange medical treatment or pickup excrement herself that means taking responsibility to hire people to do these tasks instead. Eg hire a dog walker, hire a trainer, pay for a dogwash service, arrange someone to take dog to the vet when required.

If Mom cannot clean up dog poo in the home as it happens herself - as Barb replied, very much looks like the dog needs to be re-homed.

Some people just don't have a clue. Animals can't take care of themselves. I'd love a dog for me & my mom but I'd be the one doing everything At one point I had 3 horses, 4 dogs and 3 barn cats. They never went without. It's a big responsibility but I loved every sweaty, dirty, hay in my hair minute of it.🐎

Someone gave my MIL a 'rescue dog' of unknown age and parentage. This is a woman who wouldn't let GRANDCHILDREN in her house.

Yet she kept this dog and I have to say, he was good company for her. I think he was quite elderly. He never wanted to do anything but lay on a little rug next to her feet.

She paid someone to clean up the yard and he was fully housebroken.

Luckily, he was more like a piece of furniture than a pet. When he died, she was not sad or anything.

We didn't try to replace the dog, it was a one off.

But having a pet you cannot care for is cruel. Mother had 2-4 cockatiels at one time and she couldn't SEE them as she was so bent over-and they were disgusting, filthy birds. IDK why she had them. What's more baffling to me was that once she passed away, YB kept the birds in the same cage. Mom's apartment sits empty except for the cage with these filthy birds in it. YB refuses to rehome them and they sit day after day with no stimulation, no interaction with anyone. It's cruel, to my way of thinking.

What your mom has going on is gross, at best. Please find a new home for it.

How sad for those birds.

HAve you asked if you can take the birds? Maybe? Then find them a new home where they will be cared for.

I have to say, birds are a good way (for those that can and are willing to care for them) to have motion and noise in the home. I know people that enjoy the sounds and they feel less lonely because of their bird(s).

Me, I agree with you, dirty animals for indoor living and cruel for an animal of flight to be caged.

Has this been recently. If so, call the person and tell them to please come get the dog. Then explain why Mom can't have one. Ifbits a family member tell them they can clean up after it. Really, whovthought this was a good idea.

FRom your profile: I am caring for my mother Nydia, who is 83 years old, living at home with age-related decline, alzheimer's / dementia, depression, hearing loss, mobility problems, and vision problems.

WHO gives an elder who's an amputee and wheelchair bound a DOG who's untrained? I'd call that person and have them come pick the dog up immediately. If mom wants a pet, a kitten is 95% less work.

No to the kitten. An adult cat would be better but how will.mom clean the litter box?

Best thing is to rehome the dog before she or anyone gets more attached to it.
