Find Care & Housing
Most important thing was a telephone that my mom had had at her home. She was already familiar with it and the nursing home said too many people go out and buy new phones that their loved ones find too confusing to use.

My dad's AL place had the requirement of bringing a clothing hamper on wheels and toilet paper for the bathroom. Also Clorox or Lysol wipes are good to have on hand for wiping sink, etc in between the weekly cleaning that they provide. I bought some shelf liner for the cabinet in the kitchenette. I also provide my dad with all paper goods for snacks and drinks, a paper cup dispenser and a decorative paper towel standing rack. My dad has a desk where he keeps a calendar that helps organize him as well as the usual tools like letter opener, scissors, tape, paper clips, stapler, etc. these items have all been handy to have in his apt.

It would depend on what kind of AL your Dad is in. We have some here that are only one room and others that are two bedroom apartments. Most will allow them to bring their small pets, but definitely take him his favorite things from home.

Remember to put his name on everything and on his clothes. Sometimes the laundries get the clothes mixed up.

Bring his favorite books. If he likes watching TV bring it along or buy him a new one. Prayer books, stuffed animals, whatever is familiar from home will make Dad feel happier and at home in his new place.

His favorite chair and the things closest to it. Even his favorite coaster, his favorite mug, his favorite ugly old slippers and bathrobe. Don't buy new stuff, bring the comfortable and familiar things

The items that you need to bring depends on the type of assisted living that you are moving to. If you are moving to a independent living you will have more room, so you would bring everything as if you were moving to an apartment. If you are moving to an assisted living it depends on how big it is, most apartment you will have room for a bed, dresser (tall) small sofa, TV and a very small table for your Kitchenette. Bring all of your personal clothing items and don't forget the bathroom supplies. Yes, label your clothes, they will get mixed up at some point. I suggest taking pictures of items that were part of mom or dads life, before they are dispersed. If you are going to a dementia care, be careful what you bring. You may not be concerned as much about your mom or dad but again its the nature of a dementia care building. You have to be aware of other residents. Do not bring anything sharp. I suggest you do not bring in any cleaning supplies. Most Dementia care residents have some sort of spot for a shadow box. You should gather pictures of their life, example picture of their wedding day, picture of them in their uniform, nurse, military. Another idea is take a picture of the areas in their house they are in the most and set it up like that. One more little thing if they are TV watcher tape the remote the buttons they are not going to use, and make a TV list of channels and favorite shows, so the staff can put it on for them.
