I'm the one whose mother sees me as a "Doppelganger." Because of her situation some kind of professional assistance may be necessary--especially since my own health is precarious (I'm 69) and she has tended to refuse medication. But she is not tottering on the brink of bankruptcy.

Medicare is an insurance and doesn't pay for longterm care. Medicaid pays for nursing homes. Assisted livings are private pay as r Independent living places. Where I live, your need to pay at least 2 yrs. private pay and Medicaid may take over. It depends on if the AL has reached the % of residents on Medicaid they allow.

Each state has their own rules. Call your local Medicaid office to get info.

What will Medicare cover for care giving? Nothing. Caregiving is typically self-pay until the patient runs out of assets. Then she can apply for Medicaid, which is a program for the indigent.

Hi, Dougie. Have you contacted your county's Area Agency on Aging? Maybe that would be a good start to see what services your mother qualifies for now, and start getting some info for later.

Hope you're hanging in there OK for now.

Medicare won’t pay for in-home caregiving. In California we have in-home support services through medi-cal, if your mom qualifies they will pay for a set amount of hours (not full time and they pay minimum wage). You will have to find and hire the caregiver.
