My brother who is 63 years old with alcohol related dementia, is an indigent whose only resource is social security from which payments for nursing home and dental care are paid. He has been in a Florida nursing home since 2013 when he was attempting to live on his own after being in several alcohol and depression related programs offered by the VA. With his Social Security and "pension" he returned to drinking which led to his being hospitalized for acholhol related dementia. I have his health care proxy, so I am responsible for his welfare. My permanent residence is in Baltimore, MD. However, for the past 3 1/2 years I have been full-time caregiver for my 92 year old mother. She has moved into an independent living facility in Florida, so I am moving back to MD. Moving my brother to Baltimore will allow me and my family monitor his care.

Find Care & Housing
I hope you get some responses on your question. I'm not familiar with how him being a Veteran may effect him. Normally, if your Nursing home care is paid by Medicaid, you have to apply in each state. The red tape with that might be extensive. You might talk to his Medicaid case worker about that or the facility. I would not move him until you have all the facts and everything was sorted though. I hope others who know more about this will chime in.

Is there any reason you would leave your 92 mother into Independent living in Florida and move to another state? Are you comfortable with her remaining independent as she gets older. What condition is your brother in?

I would contact the VA in Baltimore And the VA in the county where he lives in Forida. I would locate the VA facility near your home in Baltimore first and see if they have a bed or a waiting list.If there is a waiting list, see if you can get him on it. I met a family in Arizona. When her husband was placed on Arizona Long Term Care, it was not transferable to Florida. He was placed in a memory care facility, she lost her home because she had lost his benefits; she moved to Florida with her sister and he remained in Arizona alone. She could only afford to visit him once each year. So be careful; these interstate rules are difficult to maneuver.

Look for a "VA Community Living Center" in your state by googling and find a listing by state on their site. There may be a waiting list, if he has a combat related injury that disables him (or led to the alcolism?) like PTSD or they now are considering Agent Orange finally as a disabler in the VA paperwork. If he is disabled with such, they will care for him like it's a nursing home.

Contact a Social Worker or Patient Advocate through the VA and contact the Social Worker where your Brother currently is and the staff of the place where you want him to transfer to. With the combined help they can make the transition smooth as it possibly can be and the person you talk to at the VA will be able to give you a contact at the VA close to where you live so you will have a contact person there.
As indicated by "ThereIsNoTry" above there are many conditions that are related to Agent Orange and if he was exposed to Agent Orange the compensation would be quite helpful. And it would open a spot in a VA facility. Near me they have "Green House" and that is a 10 room house where vets live in home like settings as well as Community Living Center that is more like a "nursing home" setting or traditional facility. It is worth looking into. The list of qualifying conditions is growing.

Drbbm620: We have a wonderful program in Glen Burnie called Reformers Unanimous. If he is still using alcohol, he could benefit from our faith-based support group @7823 Oakwood Road. We offer transportation and food every Friday 7-9 P.M.

Hello,
Thank you all for your answers. My brother's condition is such that he is not able to care of his basic needs on his own. He has long and short term memory loss. VA benefits not available for long term care because his condition is not war related. I am less worried about my Mom at this time because she is in relatively good health and she has no significant signs of dementia or alzheimers. She doesn't want to move to Baltimore.
I did find out that we must unenroll him from Florida before we can enroll him in Md. My first priority is to find a facility that will accept Medicaid and have a vacancy.
If you have any more suggestions, please send them.
I appreciate all the help I can get.

Ask the social worker where your brother currently resides to help you navigate both Medicaid but to help you with the VA. That is part of their job and they know contacts that may be closed to yoy
