My older friend, John, lives with me and my partner. He is 83 and is having many signs of needing care with things he just can't handle any longer. What is the best way to go about getting consulted about this?

Vsleta,
Does your friend have family as well as you, his friends?
What sort of help are you seeing him needing?

Vsleta, please don't use anyone's name here. I'm reporting my posting so the moderators can remove your friend's name if it's too late for you to edit it out of your posting. How is it that this gentleman is living with you? Are you or he in touch with his family? Does he himself realize he needs help?

I think the first thing that you should do is to ask yourself if you’re willing to continue to care for your friend in your home as his needs grow?

If you are willing to do so, you can contact Council on Aging in your area and have a needs assessment done.

Does your friend have family members who live close by? You may want to speak with them as well.

If you decide that caring for your friend isn’t feasible then you could help him by looking for a suitable facility to live in and be properly cared for.

Best wishes to you and your friend.
