Last yr my dad gave each of his daughter s (3) $14,000 . since then he has fallen and now needs assisted living. If we apply for VA help will we need to return this money? How much money can he have in savings and still get financial aid?

VA does not scrutinize the finances as deeply as Medicaid, but that will change very soon. A 3 year look back rule was published and the comment period closed 3/24/15. Since the VA fiscal year ends Sept 30th, I would expect the new rule to kick in by 10/1/15. The VA application is very detailed and should not be attempted without help from a free consultant. Be aware that the claim may take a year to process, so you will have to help Dad pay the ALF while you are waiting. His net worth cannot exceed $80,000. That means savings, the house (if he had one), car etc are all added up.

I wonder if the assisted living that you are inquiring about is a Soldier and Sailor's home? They would have all of your answers. Or you will have to speak with the VA. But, in general his savings needs to go to his health needs. If he is able to pay for his own care, money that he gave away will not be a problem. It has to be paid back, if he needs it within 5 years. (But that is medicaid. I do not know about VA.)
